As we explore Pyongyang on our North Korean tour, we visit the Monument to the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War, a striking and solemn site that stands as a tribute to North Korea’s victory in the Korean War. The monument features a towering obelisk crowned with a red star, rising high against the cloudy sky, its gray stone structure exuding strength and resilience. The Korean script "해방탑" (Liberation Tower) is prominently displayed on the obelisk, while a large bronze relief, draped like a curtain and adorned with the hammer and sickle, adds to its historical significance. Plaques with inscriptions in multiple languages detail the monument’s importance, creating a quiet, reflective atmosphere.

The wide stone steps and paved plaza lead up to the central structure, surrounded by neatly landscaped gardens and distant trees. Our tour guide offers us the option to buy flowers as a gesture of respect, and I, along with a few others in our group, decide to purchase colorful blooms—red, yellow, and white—and place them at the base of the monument. Standing on the gray, tiled plaza, we feel a sense of connection to the site’s history, honoring the legacy of the Fatherland Liberation War in a simple but meaningful way. The experience leaves a lasting impression, blending curiosity with reverence for this powerful symbol of North Korean heritage.
