Journeys in the Naked City - Adventures in New York Before the Rain - full interview on Noise and Politics YouTube channel
In November 1988 I moved to New York from London and lived for 6 months there, mostly downtown in Greenwich Village and on the Lower East Side. It was a dream place to live for me at that time and somewhere I had fantasised about being for years. I got a job working at a health food store on 42nd Street just a couple of blocks down from Times Square and immersed myself into the nightlife and art and music scene. I was lucky to witness the last throes of the counterculture of 70's and 80's New York that had so inspired me to visit the city. Many years later I visited New York again and it had been transformed and cleaned up and it felt clean and sterile compared to what I remembered. I wrote a piece in Datacide magazine titled "Journeys in the Naked City – Adventures in New York Before the Rain" and in this discussed my experiences at the time as well as my nostalgia for what had disappeared. Recently Christoph from Datacide and myself sat down and discussed this article and this is a short clip from our chat.
