Vent pipes are sometimes placed at the end of large empty systems in order to expell all air during start up. These vents have been observed to deform in some cases. It was hypothesized that this deformations had occurred due to the temperature increase of quickly expelled gas from the system.
To test this hypothesis a generic CFD analysis was performed using a compressible two phase flow solver in OpenFOAM. A maximum pressure drop over the vent pipe of 0.8 bar was found. Assuming the pressure loss is entirely converted to heat, the gas temperature is increased by about 80 °C. This temperature increase exceeds the maximum design temperature in most cases, which could possibly lead to deformations for certain pipe materials.
