Description:

In this video we'll talk about what geographers call as Spain's Empty Donut. Ok, that's not actually a donut but the area inside Spain, like 100 kilometers from the coastline is particularly special as it is extremely under populated, but there is an exception: Madrid.
The population density inside the donut is of 18 people per square kilometer, which is extremely low comparing to the rest of Spain. Of course, it is an well known phenomenon that people tend to live along the coastline, but Madrid is an exception to this rule.
We'll talk more about all of this in this video, so make sure you do not miss it.
Feel free to write your opinion about this in the comments.
Hope you'll enjoy the video!

Transcript:

This, is Spain’s empty doughnut. You see, 90% of Spain‘s total population lives outside this doughnut void on an area representing 30% of Spain’s total land. As Spain was once ruling the seas, it is easy to understand why the population is grouped around the big cities on the coast, but there are two exceptions, Madrid and Zaragoza which make the empty center of Spain look like a doughnut. The doughnut area is bigger than the area of countries like Romania, Hungary and Moldova combined.
The population density inside the doughnut is just 18 people per square kilometer which is comparable to the population density in Finland. But what’s more interesting is this area here called Serrania Celtiberica with a population density of 8 people per square kilometer. Although located in the west of Europe it is the second most sparsely populated region in Europe after Lapland. To better understand, The Spanish Lapland area is slightly bigger than countries like Croatia or Denmark.
Spain at night seen from above is the best way to actual notice the doughnut shape inside Spain.
