On the morning of October 17, 2009, a group of four local cavers, led by John Heyber (45), entered Fang Cave through the middle entrance. The group consisted of John, Mike Nash, and two other members of the Alpine Club, all seasoned cavers with experience navigating the complex systems beneath the Earth. They were on a routine caving expedition, prepared for the challenges that awaited them in the dark, winding tunnels of the cave. But what began as an ordinary trip would quickly transform into a life-threatening struggle for survival.
The team arrived at the middle entrance of Fang Cave and began the descent process. First, they rigged the entrance pitch into the Coliseum, a large open space within the cave, by using an existing bolt hanger and a camming device. They used a doubled 9-millimetre dynamic rope to help the team descend safely into the cave. The Coliseum was a spacious area, and after reaching this part, the group proceeded further down the narrow Corkscrew—a steep, winding passage with increasing vertical sections.
