‘Ruska,’ is a Finnish word for the colourful autumn foliage and paints the landscape in fiery reds and golden yellows resulting in a breathtaking display of nature’s artistry.

While the tops of forests burst with color, the ground also undergoes ‘maaruska,’ which is when the plants on the ground turn into fields of bright red and yellow, transforming into a vibrant carpet.

Ruskaretki is a typical outdoors activity loved by many Finns and visitors alike.

Basically, it means a trip or hike in the city, forest, or fells to admire the stunning fall colors.

“Ruska” is also one of the photographic seasons in Lapland and makes for one of the best periods for landscape photographers!
