In its inaugural year, John Hammond was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Lifetime Achievement, that shows his importance in the music world.
As a talent scout he discovered Bob Dylan, Brice Springsteen and Aretha Franklin, amongst many others.
He has been called the most important non-musician in jazz. He had significant input into the careers of Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. He was also very active with the Newport Jazz Festivals.
He was a tireless advocate of the Civil Rights Movement and was a board member of the NAACP.
