This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Toyota Prius hybrid compact car. Gone is the 1.8L 4-cylinder, the Prius hybrid now has a 2L 4-cylinder matched to an e-CVT with a combined 196 horsepower for AWD and 194 horsepower for FWD. The previous model had 120 horsepower, that’s a 60% power boost. Standard AWD in Canada, FWD and AWD options available on all trims in the US. Acceleration times have improved compared to the outgoing model. AWD models get a 0-100 km/h time of 7.2 seconds and 0-60 time of 7 seconds. Maximum engine torque is up 16% from 120 to 139 lb-ft of torque. Torque on electric motor generator two which drives the front wheels and regenerates the battery during braking also increases by over 20%. Designed in Japan, the new Prius has 6” of ground clearance and has a sporty and modern exterior style with flowing lines, larger standard 19” wheels in Canada, standard 17” in the US. The Prius has a wider stance, a lower roofline by almost 2 inches and a lower driving position compared to the outgoing model. The front end features scooped out headlights with a C-shaped LED accent light. Moving to the rear, it is almost an inch wider, giving it a more dynamic look and the LED taillight strip looks similar to the Toyota Crown sedan. The Prius weighs less and has increased rigidity compared to the current Prius. Since there are only two trims in Canada, the base trim comes with some nice features like an 8” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, power driver’s seat, Softex upholstery, a digital rear-view mirror with Homelink, 6 USB-C ports and smart key with push button start. The top trim opens you up to the larger 12.3” touchscreen, wireless charger, a panoramic view monitor, 8-speaker JBL sound system, fixed glass roof, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power tailgate, advanced park and front and rear parking assist. The base trim in the US doesn’t have a lot of features, you get the 8” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. We recommend moving up to at least the middle trim for extra features like the larger 19” wheels, digital rear-view mirror with Homelink, heated front seats, power driver’s seat, softex upholstery, wireless charger and front and rear park assist. Optional features on this trim include the 12.3” touchscreen and the fixed glass roof. The top trim is where you will get you the heated steering, ventilated front seats, driver seat memory and you can add as an option to this trim, heated rear seats, digital rear-view mirror, panoramic view monitor and advance park. XLE options 12.3” touchscreen $610 USD, fixed glass roof $1,000 USD. Limited options: Digital mirror $200, Heated rear seats $350, Premium package $1,085 advanced park and panoramic view monitor.
