During World War II, tens of thousands of women - mainly from Korea, China, and other Asian countries - were abducted and forced into sexual slavery to give "comfort" to Japanese soldiers. Since 2011, statues have appeared all over the world to pay tribute to these women. The Japanese government has repeatedly voiced its disapproval of these memorials as it would serve as an anti-Japanese symbol that permanently condemns Japan.
In Berlin, new discussions arise as one of these statues is about to be removed in the Mitte district.
