Guy Fawkes - Bonfire Night - Fifth of November. Who was Guy Fawkes and why is his effigy still burnt on top of bonfires to this day?

"Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot"

The poem refers to Guy Fawkes and his now infamous plot to blow up London’s Houses of Parliament on November 5th, 1605. His aim was to remove the protestant King James I from the throne and restore Britain’s Catholic monarchy. Had he succeeded, Guy Fawkes would have not only killed the King and the Queen but also members of both Houses of Parliament - which would have been most of the government, several eminent church leaders, and various members of the aristocracy and nobility. However, the plot was discovered by the authorities and Guy Fawkes was arrested, tortured, tried, and executed.

On 5 November 1605, Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King's escape from assassination by lighting bonfires.

November 5th has become an annual British celebration to mark the anniversary of this discovery. We light bonfires and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes on top. We have parties and set off fireworks in our back gardens or attend large public fireworks displays. It’s cold in November in Britain, so warming foods such as hot dogs with maybe fried onions, tomato ketchup and mustard, hot soup, and baked potatoes are very popular.
