RIDE's 3rd album was started at The Sawmills but then sessions moved to Richard Branson's The Manor in Oxfordshire. This is a rare occasion where The Sawmills was not a good experience for a band. With tensions between close-knit songwriters/guitarists Mark Gardener and Andy Bell coming to the fore, it was always going to be hard for the band to work to their full potential and enjoy the experience at The Sawmills. Incredible drummer, Loz Colbert felt restricted by instructions as did bassisst Steve Queralt. John Cornfield engineered the album with John Leckie once again, at The Sawmills acting as producer.
The sound of the album was a big departure from Ride's first two albums and early EP's. Although 'Going Blank Again' did show signs of a versatile band, Carnival of Light dropped the pedal boards and synths completely, opting for a much more retro 1960's/ 70's feel. Many fans and critics feel that they lost their sense of vibrancy, energy and sonic tapestry that made them so special in the first place. But it is not a terrible album by any stretch of the imagination; I feel that 'From Time To Time' , 'Natural Grace' , 'Let's Get Lost' (which was a B-Side) , '1000 Miles', 'Don't let It Die' (also another B-Side) and the brilliant 'Moonlight Medicine' being my personal favourite on the album, featuring Deep Purple's Jon Lord on organ.
