On February 14, 1987, Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer" began a four-week run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. It was first released the previous August from the band's third album Slippery When Wet, becoming the second single after "You Give Love A Bad Name". "Livin' On A Prayer" surpassed Madonna's sixth hit "Open Your Heart" just one week after its peak.
Upon release, the song sold 800,000 copies in the United States and was certified triple platinum in 2013. As of June 2020, its video has over 600 million views on YouTube.
Jon Bon Jovi co-wrote the tune with Richie Sambora and Desmond Child, admitting that the song's success came as a surprise to him. In an interview with The Irish Times, he said: "God bless this song. But, my God, who knew? Not us, I can assure you. It was created on a day when none of us had any ideas. We just had a conversation and that's what came of it. I'm happy to have my name on it!"
