As one of the world's most propulsive techno DJs, we expected nothing less when Sunil Sharpe stepped up for The Art of DJing in May, 2020. As it happened, a scrapped first session and lockdown filming restrictions meant that one of the most eye-popping shoots we've ever captured was cooked up on the fly.
"I didn't want it to be seen as having no purpose," Sharpe told us on reflection. "Maybe it didn't have the same educational purpose, but it did have a purpose I think!"
A combination of elite proficiency, an underdog attitude and his mentorship for budding DJs in Ireland has marked Sharpe as a rare breed. In the interview with Ryan Keeling, he discussed how his signature style is a bit like snooker—with an emphasis on thinking a few steps ahead.
"I don't ever want to be complacent," he said at the time, "thinking, 'Oh they've booked me before so I can take it easy.' That would be completely against why I DJ. I DJ now with the same attitude and vigour that I had at the beginning, if not more."
As well as nodding to four-deck inspirations like Ben Sims and Umek, Sharpe hopes today that this demonstration may have "encouraged more DJs to play on extra decks and enjoy the challenge."
To the rest of the field: no pressure, eh?
