Demos have an alluring quality, sketches of what a song could be, scrappy drafts filled with potential, completely free from overplay. That energy, that naivety is very hard to recapture. There’s a term used for when musicians get too attached to the demo versions of their songs: dem-oitis. And The La’s Lee Mavers is the patron saint of demoitis. A man that in his mind, whether due to perfectionism or paranoia, has yet to truly nail his debut album. You may also know him as being an architect of Britpop, the sculptor of the finest indie love song of the 1980s. This is New British Canon, and this is the story of “There She Goes”.
