Rehearsing the Al Jarreau version of Chick Corea's Spain at Minton's as part of the 'James Hurt Experience' celebrating the reopening of this historic landmark as a music and culinary joint venture. Beka and Monica show there mutual admiration for this beautifully crafted composition.Beka Gochiashvili, still in his teens, brings a youth and vitality to this composition. Monica Hope brings all of her creativity and uncanny sophistication to the composition. She comes from a rich musical legacy being the daughter of Minton's house pianist Bertha Hope and the visionary pianist Elmo Hope, a central figure at the original Minton's.
As some of you may know Paco De Lucia was an integral part of my pianistic approach. The first tour I did was to Spain and toured San Sebastien, Valencia, Barcelona, Malaga and other parts. The first cassette tape I brought back was that of Paco himself. Through research I would find out that it was he who inspired Chick Corea to compose what would become a jazz standard for both listeners and instrumentalists alike. Fire is a thing of beauty. Paco has passed the torch. May it forever spread it's luminescence.
