As you can see from the dashboard of my truck, we're navigating a minefield of #Potholes. This isn't a poorly maintained road in a city; this is a standard route in remote #Alaska. We call it the "Alaska roller coaster," and if you're not prepared, it can end your trip in a heartbeat. Hitting one of these potholes at the wrong speed or angle can easily cause serious #CarDamage or lead to a #FlatTire.
And out here, a simple flat tire isn't a simple problem. As I mention in the video, we're at least an hour and a half, maybe two hours, away from the nearest mechanic. When you're this deep in the #Wilderness, you can't just call for roadside assistance. You are your own first responder. To make matters worse, even if you could get your vehicle towed, the local mechanic likely won't have a specialized tire in stock. You could be stranded for a day or more just waiting for a replacement. That's a dangerous situation when you're dealing with the unpredictable Alaskan weather and wildlife.
This is the crucial advice every person needs to know before they #ExploreAlaska by vehicle: be prepared. Drive slowly and carefully, know the condition of your vehicle before you leave, and most importantly, have the gear and knowledge to handle problems yourself. That means having a full-sized spare tire, a jack that works on uneven ground, and the tools to get the job done.
This is the #AlaskaLife. It's rugged, demanding, and requires a level of self-sufficiency that's rare in the modern world. It's part of what makes this place so special.
