Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/Kirill Karabits
Johannes Moser (cello)
Schubert Unfinished Symphony
Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations
Mendelssohn Symphony No. 5 ‘Reformation’
Transcript:
Schubert abandoned his Eighth Symphony in 1822, he couldn’t find the inspiration to complete what turned out to be his most profound and popular symphony. It may be unfinished, but it has huge emotional scope and looks forward to the epic Romantic symphonies of the 19th century – by Mahler and Bruckner.
Mendelssohn’s 1830 homage to Luther, his Reformation Symphony, isn’t performed much today. Which is a shame, because it’s one his the most affirming, joyous works. Like many Romantic symphonies, it travels from darkness to light – and how. The finale blazes as a mighty German hymn sweeps the orchestra to its glorious conclusion.
Before the Mendelssohn, and as a musical sorbet, Tchaikovsky’s elegant Rococo Variations, inspired by music of the 18th century, will be a brilliant, sparkling showcase for the outstanding cellist Johannes Moser.
