*CHARLES WRIGHT - EXPRESS YOURSELF (1970)* Taken from Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's 1970 LP of the same name, 'Express Yourself' was the Los Angeles group's biggest hit, reaching #3 on the US R&B chart, #12 on the Billboard Top 100 and earning the song a Grammy nomination for 'Best R&B performance for a duo or group with vocals'.

'Express Yourself' experienced a second wave of popularity in the late 80s after being sampled by controversial LA Hip Hop group N.W.A. on their 1989 single of the same name. N.W.A's rework served as an upbeat, radio friendly counterpoint to the LP from which it came, 1988's 'Straight Outta Compton', an album which attracted no small amount of controversy for its use of explicit language, depictions of violence and no holds barred descriptions of life in South Central Los Angeles in the late 80s.
