Couple of new instruments to play with as well, unintentionally both that seem to have generated a fair amount of negativity.
The #polyd from @behringer is a 4 oscillator synth based on the fabled minimioog. Now, I don’t agree with everything Behringer - certainly their clones of modern, already reasonably cheap instruments (such as the recent keystep one) are a little distasteful to me and I get the impact they can have on smaller synth companies who are struggling to survive and don’t work with the same economies of scale. However, when it comes to making reproductions of instruments that are unobtainable to 99% of us due to their rarity/scarcity or frankly cost, I don’t have an issue. I’m never going to own a Minimoog. I’ll probably never even play one, but I can own and play this and I got it for £350 (granted 2nd hand). That’s around £5000 less than the alternative. Certainly I’m enjoying experiencing a knob per function, no preset, big, fat sounding analog synth at a very reasonable price point and am grateful I have that opportunity.
On the other end of the spectrum is the @torsoelectronics S4. I recently picked this up despite the somewhat negative online reviews and I am glad I ignored them. It’s a wonderful instrument. Again, I understand people’s gripes. This instrument was released (and remains to a degree) unfinished, with a number of software issues and several buttons that don’t do anything in the current firmware. However, it also DOES do a lot, and what it does do it does exceptionally well, is great fun to use and sounds amazing. I can only assume @torsoelectronics would rather have released this as a fully finished product, but for various reason they had to release it when they did (after all they won’t enjoy the same luxuries as Behringer when I comes to scale), and I understand that owners are frustrated by the delays in updates, but I can’t imagine it’s for the want of trying, and I’m sure they’ll come and this amazing machine will get even better.
Bit of a music tech rant above 👆 but I did find it ironic that these two great instruments are getting criticised for totally opposing reasons. One for not pushing boundaries far enough, and the other for being too creative and therefore not yet fully realised on release. Perhaps it’s time we sat back and realised how fortunate we are as creators in 2025. Meanwhile I hope people can sit back and enjoy this little slice of ambient ❤️
