When we say that the problem of Africa is Africans, it's not just a saying. We strongly believe that if Africa truly wants to break free from the shackles of colonialism and the West, it will happen. And, all it takes is one strong African leader. The military leader of Mali, just proved how effective a strong African leader can be. You see, the Western mining companies in Mali, have been taking the Malian government for granted. They come into Mali, set up operations, and make billions of dollars of profit. Yet, they have refused to pay their taxes. The previous democratic government in Mali did not do anything about it. However, Colonel Assimi Goita decided to do something about it and the company has decided to pay 160 million dollars of its debt. But what did Colonel Assimi Goita do? Let’s find out.
Like most African countries, the mining sector in Mali has been dominated by Western companies since Independence. In Mali, these companies include the Canadian firms Barrick Gold and B2Gold, Australia's Resolute Mining, and the British Hummingbird Resources. Now, despite the jihadist insurgency experienced in Mali, these Western companies have continued to operate, mining Mali’s gold. That is to tell you how much profit their operations are giving them. And, that’s thanks to the one-sided beneficial agreement signed between these companies and the previous Malian government. You see, for some reason, the previous government agreed to sign a mining code that allowed the government to own only a 20 percent stake in any mines exploited by a foreign company.
