The band was managed by Yardbirds producer Simon Napier-Bell and was active in the late 1960s. Due to the Yardbirds connection, Jeff Beck had performed on one of the band's singles, "But She's Mine." Eventually their guitarist Geoff McClelland was replaced with Marc Bolan who wrote several songs for the group including their most successful single, "Desdemona."
The band was led by Andy Ellison and Chris Townson while being named after their bassist, John Hewlett. In later years they played with Trevor White, Martin Gordon, Ian Hampton, Ian Macleod and Boz Boorer in their other bands and a reformation of John's Children.
They enjoyed fighting each other on stage which got them kicked off of their German tour as support for The Who, but Keith Moon sustained an injury that allowed Chris Townson to fill his role for a time.
Due to Marc Bolan's inclusion in the group, this could be considered a proto-glam band as they predated glam rock but potentially started the style to some degree.
Their album "Orgasm" was commissioned by White Whale, the early home of The Turtles, and featured the sounds of screaming girls taken from the film, "A Hard Day's Night" by The Beatles but it was eventually rejected and wasn't released until after the band had already disbanded.
Later iterations of the band released a live album along with Jet and Radio Stars, "Music for the Herd of Herring" and a studio album in 2011 called "Black & White"
