One of the main aims of my van build was to create it cheaply but adding batteries and electronics can push the price up quickly, so I tried to be as savvy as possible with what I added to the van!
Up first, power. I’m no electrician and in fact I don’t know the first thing about leisure batteries and wiring, so decided to buy a large power pack with built-in ports. I made sure to get one with all the ports on the same face, so I could build it into my van table and have easy access at all times.
Given the fact that I won’t be living in the van and so will only have limited power requirements, this suits my needs perfectly. I can power devices via USB, 12v and even 240v if necessary.
Onto lighting, I originally had a set of AAA battery powered lights stuck to the ceiling and these were great but I didn’t like having to remove the batteries to charge them every time, so I swapped them out for a set of USB rechargeable lights which I can charge via my van battery pack!
To create a bit of atmosphere in the van, I got a 12m set of fairy lights, which wrap around the ceiling twice and plug into my battery via USB. I actually use these more than the ceiling spot lights.
To keep food cool on day trips and when camping, I bought a small but practical 12 volt electric cool box. It fits snuggly on a platform I made in between the front seats and although small is just enough for what we need. I can plug it into the 12v van port when driving or the battery pack when stationary and I also have a mains adaptor for when at a campsite.
