This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek, the best selling Subaru. The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has a more athletic exterior design than the previous model with a new front grille and bumper. It has 220 mm of ground clearance for good off-roading capability and winter driving conditions. We have the Outdoor model in Crystal White Pearl. It has 17” dark grey painted aluminum wheels with a dark grey metallic finish on the front bumper, wheel arches and door mirrors. With the high ground clearance and wide stance, it really adds quite a sporty look to this sub compact SUV. One exclusive feature this Outdoor trim gets is a front view camera. It captures a 180-degree view around the front of the vehicle. This image is projected onto the multi function display giving a clear view of obstacles close to the vehicle. The Crosstrek comes standard with AWD and has two engines, the base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The second option, new to 2021 is the 2.5L 4-cylinder with a CVT, 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. It is available on the top two trims. In the US, a PHEV is also available. If you want a manual transmission, you are in luck; there are 3 trims with a 6-speed manual in Canada and two in the US. All have the base engine. The Crosstrek is equipped with more advanced safety features including, EyeSight driver assist technology. It includes, pre-collision braking, pre-collision brake assist, pre-collision throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, lane departure warning, lane sway warning, lead vehicle start and lane keep assist. EyeSight is not available on the manual transmission trims. We have the Outdoor trim similar to the Sport trim in the US and for under $30,000 CAD/$26,495 USD there’s great value. Some standard features include, the bigger 8” touchscreen, all weather soft touch material seats in grey with yellow stitching throughout the cabin. The seats are very comfortable and have a nice texture to them. For an extra $4500 CAD, you can move up to the top Limited trim and enjoy a sunroof, black or grey leather seats with orange stitching, navigation, an 8 speaker Harman Kardon sound system and 18” wheels. If you are on more of a budget, one up from the base model offers plenty of features, 17” wheels, auto stop/start, LED fog lights, keyless access and push button start, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. Although when you crunch the numbers, I feel you are better off to go with the Outdoor trim with the larger 2.5L engine and the extra features like the bigger touchscreen for only $1,800 more. If you can make the stretch, you get so much more for your money. There’s not much difference in fuel economy between the 2L and 2.5L engines but that extra power makes a big difference to the drive. The 2L gets a combined city/highway rating of 7.9L/100km, 30 MPG and the 2.5L gets 8L/100km, 29 MPG. One thing I noticed about this Crosstrek is how quiet the cabin is. Consumer Reports took notice of this too, ranking it number 1 of 13 in compact SUVs for quietness. It is one of the easiest on your ears according to CR. JD Power gives the 2021 Crosstrek an overall score of 80/100 and a quality and reliability score of 77/100. CarEdge states the Crosstrek will retain 62% of its value after 5 years. It performs very well from a resale standpoint, ranking in the top 20% of models at years 3, 5 & 7.
