Welcome to another instalment of fixing up our 125 year old house in Normandy France.

This time I tackle the floor of the cellar, (or basement or even cave if you are French), The floor is currently made from just crushed stone that has been trodden down and filled with dirt over the years. It isn't flat or even and is a nightmare to work on so I'm putting down a concrete floor.

I'm not using reinforcing in the floor because it is only going to get foot traffic on it, so 75 - 100mm (3" - 4") of concrete is going to be plenty strong enough. Also, as the cellar is 3/4 underground the walls are already pretty damp, so I'm never going to have it totally dry down there without some major work, so the plastic under the floor will hopefully slow some of it coming up through the floor.
