Music with kind permission from Naxos Records

Schumann only completed one concerto for his own instrument the piano, but its fiery passions and confiding intimacies have made it a favourite, tonight framed by two conspicuously elevated works revelling in a sumptuous solemnity.

Wagner Prelude to Parsifal
Schumann Piano Concerto
Elgar Symphony No.1
Conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens
Piano Yulianna Avdeeva

Transcript:
Schumann was one of the most brilliant composers for the piano, so it’s surprising that he only wrote one concerto for the instrument. But what a work. It’s packed full of wonderful, surging Romantic tunes, and the piano and orchestra are entwined in a beautiful musical dialogue from start to finish. It’s the perfect ensemble piece, although there are plenty of places for the brilliant Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva to shine.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will then be playing to its British music strengths, with Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 written in 1908. From its opening, noble melody, it’s one of the glories of English music. Grandiose, optimistic, but with creeping melancholy and unease, it’s a thrilling adventure with magical effects and one of the most compelling final few minutes in all symphonic music, as Elgar’s tune reveals itself for one final, glorious time.
