It was at this point in the war, six months after the Nazis had invaded Poland that Allied soldiers were finally sent fully into battle and as the struggle became progressively more brutal there could be no clearer indication that the phony war had come to an end, and Europe was now in the full throws of bloody conflict. Nevertheless, for the Allies the horrors and heartbreaks of this period would also be marked by moments of triumphant glory. When thousands of Allied troops were rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk in northern France, while Nazi troops edged ever closer as the German planes of Goering’s Luftwaffe screamed overhead, it was one of the most inspiring moments of the entire war.
