Arranged in almost a parquet fashion out of oddments of chestnut, cherry and oak, the floor has amazing character and a dazzling array of colours. When the sun comes through the window, the oranges of the cherry and chestnut really glow.
Some pieces of wood are nothing special, however others are worthy of use on top bespoke pieces of furniture. These planks would have been felled from the woodland very close by around 140 years ago. There is dense woodland meters from the rear door and has been for hundreds of years. Most of the local trees are all hardwood.
We were somewhat worried about the condition of the floor, woodworm has caused severe problems with numerous floorboards across the whole house. Unbelievably, this room seemed untouched.
Hours of sanding and scraping took away years of glue, filler and damage from rodents. Sadly, the boards still looked somewhat tired and grey. It wasn't until we applied the linseed oil that they suddenly sprang into life. The only issue was the colour was initially very dark. As the oil soaked in the colour began to change and the more vibrant tones of orange, yellow and red started to appear. When the bees wax was applied everything really popped.
