The history of the guitar dates back centuries and spans a variety of cultures. The earliest guitar-like instruments, such as the zither and lyre, had 3 to 4 strings and emerged in Mesopotamia and Egypt over 4,000 years ago.

In the European Renaissance, the popularity of the lute, the precursor to the modern guitar, grew, while in Spain the vihuela appeared, which had more strings and featured a decorative rosette that was incorporated into the classical guitar.

During the Baroque era, the Baroque guitar, with 5 pairs of strings, was very popular. The Italians added the sixth string in the 17th century, establishing an enduring model. In the 19th century, Antonio Torres Huren standardized the guitar design, which incorporated 6 strings and a shape similar to today's classical guitar.

Until the 20th century, strings were made from animal intestines; Metal strings emerged in the 19th century and nylon strings in the 20th century. Originally, guitars had little more than 8 frets, but their number grew over time.

The need to tune each string led to the invention of tuning machines, by the German master Joakim Thielke. The modern classical guitar emerged in 1850, when Antonio Torres increased the size of the body and improved the neck-joint system, optimizing volume and tone, setting a new standard.
