Through the centuries there were several great virtuoso musicians capable of spellbinding runs and jaw-dropping feats of technical prowess on a range of various instruments. In addition to this there was a school of improvisation that had nothing to do with jazz or any other musical idiom. The concept grew out of several experiments with tuning systems, manufacturing specifications and the need for keyboardist to test the limits of the instruments being built at the time. The French organ school movement in addition to early and late contemporary church had much to do with this improvisational mindset and it continues to this day both inside and outside of creative improvisational circles. Improvisational spontaneous composition from a pianistic perspective is what giants like Fats Waller and Art Tatum had at their disposal coupled with pianistic figuration, a lifetime study in-of-itself. I have decided to share some simple modal improvisations from four years ago during which time one or more improvisations were composed daily. Thanks for listening.
