First of all, I want to make clear, this is more of a debate video rather a rant one against MBV. I'm obviously a huge MBV fan and i take a lot of influence and inspiration from them (Hell, I even own and play a Red Jazzmaster). But there have been a few things that have annoyed me regarding this band in recent years. They seem to be artists that are unsure of what they want to be and what they want to be remembered as. They seem to be tied between a LEGACY band and an artist that wants to still be CURRENTLY RELEVANT.
Firstly, the long hiatus between musical activity and particularly the release of any, has caused a rift in the fan base. There is a case for possessing an approach to music that is to have a low but effective output and the other approach of having a high output at the expense of quality, perhaps.
Secondly, Kevin Shields in particular has conducted many interviews in the last 5 years where he has conveyed ambition and promised new activity regarding My Bloody Valentine. These promises have not, as of January 2022, come to any fruition. We've witnessed the band perform two new songs live in 2018, but as of now, there are now signs of them having been produced and certainly not released to the general public in any way, shape or form, even with the recent signing to Domino Recordings. These false promises have left many fans frustrated.
Finally, there have been reports of the band being unhappy with certain music streaming platforms (which I don't blame them for, but it's the reason that is controversial) for printing their lyrics in a way that the band don't feel is accurate. That is a fair enough point for most commercial artists, but for an artist like MBV who have contempt for coherent vocals, (in which lyrics are projected from typically), it does seem like a rather strange claim. After all, an artist that purposefully diverts the focal point away from lyrics as an artistic intent, should not be concerned with such a thing.
That was the revolutionary vision and selling point to MBV; They deliberately used the vocals in their songs from the Loveless album and onward as a layer to the whole mix of the song in which the listener interpreted the sounds in their own way, making their music very interactive and impressionistic. Therefore, it does seem odd that they are unhappy with a certain interpretation being given by online music providing platforms.
Another controversial move by MBV, is their copyright infringement policy which is extremely strict indeed. They have a reputation of being so precious about their music and their LEGACY, that it has been very difficult to get access to their music. It is only very recently, that they have given the green light to Spotify to provide their music via a streaming service platform. And now MBV are now abusing that right too! By attacking Spotify over the lyric printing.
So there is a lot of debate, controversy, mystery, ambiguity and wonder revolving My Bloody Valentine. Maybe that's why we find them so interesting?
