
Some East German citizens referred to as Ostalgie (“nostalgia for the East”), felt uncertain or angry about the sudden integration. They worried about job security and felt overwhelmed by rapid changes in their social system, as well as the dominance of Western capitalism.
And some West Germans were concerned about the economic strain of reunification. The costs of merging the two economies and bringing East Germany up to Western standards were enormous, leading some to feel resentment or worry about the future.
