The "blue tears" are mainly caused by a bioluminescent marine plankton called "sea fireflies (Vargula hilgendorfii)". When stimulated by the crashing waves, their luminescent glands emit a light blue glow. When a large number of these plankton gather, they create a stunning fluorescent blue sea.
Pingtan in Fujian province of southeast China is known for the dreamy natural phenonmenon. It is more romantic when blue tears occur on a rainy day!
