Europe is Changing!

In 2014, far-right parties held about 15% of the seats in the European Parliament. Fast forward to 2024, and they have risen to roughly 25%, signaling a significant shift in European politics.

Take France, where Marine Le Pen’s National Rally secured 41.5% of the vote in the 2022 presidential runoff—an impressive rise from 17.9% a decade earlier in 2012.

In Italy, Georgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy surged from 4.4% in 2018 to 26% in 2022, leading her to become Italy’s first far-right Prime Minister since World War II.

Hungary remains dominated by Viktor Orbán, whose Fidesz party continues to secure over 50% of the vote, cementing his hold on power and his reputation as Europe’s leading nationalist strongman.

In Slovakia, Robert Fico's populist SMER party won 23% of the vote in the 2023 elections, returning him to power with a nationalist and Eurosceptic agenda.

And now, all eyes are on Romania. On November 24, 2024, the first round of the presidential elections saw ultranationalist candidate Călin Georgescu take the lead with 22.94% of the vote. Known for his pro-Russian views and skepticism toward the EU and NATO, Georgescu’s rise has sent shockwaves through Romanian politics. He will face off against reformist candidate Elena Lasconi, who secured 19.18%, in the runoff scheduled for December 8, 2024.

With an escalating economic crisis and the war in Ukraine showing no signs of resolution, Europe’s future looks increasingly uncertain.
