Shou Sugi Ban is a Westernized version of an ancient Japanese wood preservation technique called Yakisugi. This technique is used to weatherproof wood by burning it and applying oil finishes to it.
I find it very interesting and have been experimenting with a few methods, using it as a finish to some of my projects.
I have lots of photos and videos of my trials with this and decided to give you guys a teaser into this new found technique for me. Hope you guys enjoy.
To get a better understanding of what Shou Sugi Ban is, I guess you would have to first dismiss some misconceptions, by clarifying what it is not.
It is not a ‘type’ of wood that is grown and harvested, and it is also not a type of finishing product purchased from the store. It is more so a technique ‘used’ in finishing a specific type of wood.
Shou Sugi Ban is, for the lack of better words, a Westernized version of an ancient Japanese wood preservation technique called Yakisugi.
