Shou Sugi Ban is a Westernized version of an ancient Japanese wood preservation technique called Yakisugi. This technique is used to weatherproof wood by burning it and applying oil finishes to it.I find it very interesting and have been experimenting with a few methods, using it as a finish to some of my projects.
I have lots of photos and videos of my trials with this and decided to give you guys a teaser into this new found technique for me. Hope you guys enjoy.
To get a better understanding of what Shou Sugi Ban is, I guess you would have to first dismiss some misconceptions, by clarifying what it is not.
It is not a ‘type’ of wood that is grown and harvested, and it is also not a type of finishing product purchased from the store. It is more so a technique ‘used’ in finishing a specific type of wood.
Shou Sugi Ban is, for the lack of better words, a Westernized version of an ancient Japanese wood preservation technique called Yakisugi.
