Copyright restrictions pose a challenge for our channel. YouTube automatically monetizes the songs in this mix, directing ad revenue to copyright owners. This means we can’t control the ads or their frequency. As a result, 99.9% of MAJ’s yearly viewership generates no income for us due to copyrighted music.

This mix highlights the spiritual essence of Gnawa music, interwoven with elements of jazz and global grooves. It’s a reflection of the timeless conversation between ancestral traditions and contemporary expression.

Gnawa is a musical and spiritual tradition rooted in Morocco’s ancient history — often referred to as “Sufi Blues.” Its origins trace back to West African slaves brought to Morocco as early as the 14th century. Over generations, these communities blended their musical rhythms and spiritual beliefs with Islam and Moroccan culture, forming a powerful new spiritual and musical identity.
The rhythms and chants of Gnawa songs are deeply symbolic — prayers invoking saints and spirits for healing, liberation, and connection. Traditional ceremonies, known as Lilas, are led by a Maalem (master musician), who guides the ensemble through a night of ritual music intended to cleanse body, mind, and spirit by invoking seven spirits, each represented by different colors and symbolic meanings.

This mix pays homage to the roots of Gnawa and honors the legendary Maalem Mahmoud Guinia, whose passing left a profound mark on the tradition. His influence — alongside so many others — continues to shape the sound and spirit of Gnawa music.
Above all, this mix is a gesture of deep respect to all Gnawa musicians: those who have passed, those who continue to carry the torch with devotion and creativity, and the new generation shaping its future with fresh energy and vision.

Beatkozina is a dynamic electronic/world music duo blending the vibrant sounds of London and Marrakech. Formed by Mehdi Naami (DJ, producer, multi-instrumentalist) and Gregory Jouandon (jazz drummer, pianist, producer), the project bridges deep electronic grooves with global rhythmic traditions.

Drawing from Afro-rooted rhythms, North African influences, jazz, and Afro-Latin textures, Beatkozina forges a distinctive sound — where minimalism meets tribal energy. Their music flows between Afro House, deep electronic, and percussive world music, shaped by intricate Moroccan rhythms and sophisticated musicality.

Beatkozina performs as a duo (live/DJ hybrid sets), with Mehdi also playing solo and holding a residency at House of Groove by Rehab London.
Whether in clubs or on festival stages, Beatkozina delivers a deep, percussive, and culturally rich experience — connecting dancefloors through sound, identity, and rhythm.
