President Ruto is in the news again. And, it’s all thanks to a cyber attack allegedly orchestrated by a Moldovan firm, B2BHint. The increasing digitalization of services has made African countries more vulnerable to cyber-attacks. This time, the attack exploited a weakness in Kenya's government-owned Business Registration Service (BSR) to gain access to sensitive data of major shareholders in registered firms. While investigations are still ongoing regarding the perpetrators, the leak has revealed some valuable details about the businesses and assets of President Ruto, his family members, and the former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta. But what exactly did the leak reveal? Let's find out.

The Kenya Business Registration Service, is a semi-autonomous government agency operating under the State Law Office in Kenya. It serves as the sole custodian of all company records and information for entities registered in the country, making it a critical repository of corporate information. According to reports, the BRS was a victim of a cyber attack believed to have occurred on the night of January 31st, 2025.

On February 2nd, B2BHing, a Moldovan business intelligence firm, was selling a 'goldmine' of data of prominent shareholders in two million companies yesterday, including residential addresses, emails, and phone numbers. According to the reports, the sale included data from President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his family, and a number of other famous investors. Now, for years, much of this information, particularly that of President Ruto, has been hidden from the public eye. But, the data breach has now revealed it to all.
