Turns out, her mother had just gone to the bathroom with her brother. And she soon returned.
The man placed an order and strikes up a conversation with the woman. He learned that the woman's husband has just passed away 1 year ago. From stomach cancer. By the time they found out it was already too late. They still went ahead with the treatment and went into lots of debts. However, he still passed away.
Before he died, he had instructed the woman to tell their children that he has gone away for a business trip. So that's what the woman has been doing. When their daughter sneak a message to her father whom she believes is still alive, the woman has to use his phone to text her as if she was him.
So far, they are still in the dark about their father's death and she has the added burden of not being able to cry in front of her children. She doesn't want them to be broken. Eventually they may figure it out on their own.
The man was empathetic. He never expected that a simple question would cost him over $2k. But he transferred 2k to the woman when he went to pay for the meal. Far more than what he should've paid. He also left a message of support as well as an envelop of cash.
The woman is raising two children completely by herself with no help and has hundreds of thousands to pay off.
