The Cave of Death (Cueva de la Muerte) in Costa Rica, near the Poás Volcano, looks harmless but is extremely dangerous. It continuously releases carbon dioxide, a gas heavier than air, which sinks and fills the cave from the bottom up. That means there's almost no oxygen inside. Even a lit torch will go out instantly when lowered in. The CO₂ concentration is so high, it can cause asphyxiation within minutes. Though it’s a popular curiosity near Recreo Verde resort, visitors are warned to keep their distance. It’s one of nature’s most silent and invisible traps.
