Civil War artillery tactics: surprisingly Napoleonic! 砲 Despite rifled artillery, American gunners preferred older 6- and 12-pounder smoothbores. Why? Infantry battles still happened at close range, making traditional roundshot, shrapnel, & canister effective. Smoothbores were faster, easier to maintain, & more mobile. However, rifled artillery shone in sieges. At Fort Pulaski (1862), percussion shells tore through masonry, while smoothbore balls bounced off, signaling the end of brick forts! #ArtilleryTactics #CivilWarArtillery #HistoryShorts #DavidErnenwein #AmericanCivilWar #NapoleonicTactics #MilitaryHistory #RifledArtillery #SmoothboreCannons #FortPulaski #SiegeWarfare #MilitaryTechnology #CannonHistory #CivilWarCannons
