A trend that started with Mali has spread across West Africa. From Mali to Burkina Faso and Niger to Chad and Senegal, all these countries have expressed their dissatisfaction with France’s presence in their countries. As a result, they have all sent French troops packing. However, while these countries are taking this revolutionary step, West Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria, has decided to draw closer to France. Recently, Nigeria signed a 300 million euro investment deal with France. According to Nigeria, this deal is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s infrastructure and food security. The question is “Has the Nigerian government not seen what France’s influence has done in the Sahel region? Is this a smart move for Nigeria? Let's find out.

Last month, the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu paid a visit to France where he met with President Macron. This was the first official visit made by any Nigerian President in the last two decades. During the visit, both countries signed two major deals. One of which was a $300 million pact to develop critical infrastructure, renewable energy, transportation, agriculture and healthcare in Nigeria. A joint statement from both nations noted: ‘The two countries committed to forge a strategic relationship in project implementation and enhance mutual trade and cross-border services by removing fiscal barriers while protecting labour rights.’
This commitment reflects both countries’ intentions to smooth the way for increased trade and investment, focusing on removing barriers and fostering a more cooperative business environment.
