Southern Mexico’s Oaxaca state has been devastated by Hurricane Erick. Now a Category 4 hurricane, Erick brought winds reaching up to 275 kilometers per hour (170 mph) and waves as high as 8 meters (26 feet), causing widespread destruction in coastal areas, especially around Puerto Escondido. The combination of torrential rain and storm surge overwhelmed infrastructure, flooded roads, and forced the evacuation of thousands. Emergency response efforts are ongoing in the affected regions.
