Making music the PC way
Infrared technology, and Nick Picketts innovation, is allowing severely disabled children at GOSH to enjoy and play music. Nick, a music specialist and researcher at GOSH, explained that music was very important for a childs development and education, and that it had therapeutic qualities too. We use music to help children interact, and teach children who have problems communicating to sign along to music.

Nick has produced some interactive aids to help physically impaired children join in with music sessions. The technology involves a computer and a special interface designed by Nick so a disabled child can use a breath tube to emulate mouse buttons. Many of the children Nick works with have a tracheostomy and cant blow out large amounts of air, so his device is very sensitive and works from air pressure in the mouth rather than the lungs. And now, with the help of IT magazine PCFormat and Friends of the Children of Great Ormond Street, Nick also has infrared tracking headsets that enable a child to simply look at a point on the computer screen, and use breath action to create sounds.

This all came about when Nick contacted PCFormat to get help with translating some music software for disabled children that hed written earlier as part of his PhD. When I told them what it was for they said they could show me the head tracking device, and organised for one to be used in future research. PCFormat printed an article about how Nicks work was helping the patients in its August edition.

Nick has now finished writing a programme for the head tracking device. All the child needs to do is look at the instrument they want to play on the screen and they can perform in a band. After PCFormat organised the donation of the head tracker, the Friends of the Children of Great Ormond Street helped obtain other equipment to assist children through the support of a Trustee.

In his work here Nick works with babies through to teenagers, and has to cater to all their needs and abilities. Every child that comes in has different abilities and aspirations. We are constantly challenged by keeping up with developing technology and the childrens needs.
