Willem Dafoe acts each scene in three different styles: 1. as if he knows Patrick is the killer, 2. as if he only suspects Patrick is the killer, 3. as if he doesn't suspect Patrick at all. Director Mary Harron then spliced the takes together to keep viewers guessing.
