Eger! A town in the northeast of Hungary and one of my first ever big surprises in Eastern Europe.In 2023 I visited Eger as part of my second big Eastern Europe trip. Up until that point I had only visited Budapest in Hungary and I wanted to check out some smaller places.
What I found was an incredibly peaceful, beautiful, and alive town filled with kind people, good food, and gorgeous architecture.
It was summer, so they had a stage set up in the main square with live performances. All the restaurants terraces were filled and everyone was having a great time.
At that point I hadn’t had many experiences on my travels were I, being the introvert that I was, felt so comfortable, safe, and happy in a new place.
The city’s main attraction is the castle (like many cities in the East). This castle was very well preserved and the views on the city from the walls were spectacular.
If I haven’t convinced you yet to visit Eger, I don’t know what will. Hungary in general is an extremely good place to explore as a solo traveler, because of its safety and affordability.
