As much as we are advocating for non-Western partnerships, it is also important to know that the best partnership for Africans should be based on mutual benefit. Because the truth is that every country including non-Western countries like China and Russia is always on the lookout for their interests. So, if African leaders do not step up and demand better benefits, even Russia and China will take advantage of it. Now, why are we saying all this? Well, recently, Russia and Congo signed an agreement to build an oil pipeline in Congo. However, according to the deal, Russia will own 90 percent of the pipeline for the next 25 years. The question is “How exactly is this beneficial to Congo? In today's video, we are going to analyze the oil agreement in detail and reveal why it's not a smart deal.

Congo Brazzaville and Russia have had strong ties since the Second World War. In fact, both countries collaborated during the Soviet era. This is why the Congolese President, Sassou Nguesso was invited to Russia to celebrate Russia’s Victory Day Celebration. Now, after the celebration, the leaders of both countries had a private high-level meeting where they discussed a range of issues. Among these issues was the construction of the oil pipeline in Congo.

You see, the idea to construct an oil pipeline was first discussed in 2022. But it wasn't until late 2024, that both countries reached a provisional agreement to construct an oil pipeline that would connect the capital, Brazzaville, to the western port of Pointe-Noire. Now, just a few weeks after the Congolese President’s visit to Russia, President Putin has finally signed the bill into law ratifying the agreement on cooperation with the Congo in constructing the Pointe-Noire - Loutete - Maloukou - Trechot petroleum product pipeline. In simple terms, the construction of the oil pipeline can now begin. While this is supposed to be great news for Congo, some of the provisions in the deal calls for concern.
