Let's start the year 2025 with lots of P.M.A. [Positive Mental Attitude]
"Don't care what they may say
We got that attitude!
Don't care what you may do
We got that attitude!
Hey, we got that P.M.A.!
Hey, we got the P.M.A.!"
Leading the way in the very early 80’s were Washington D.C. 's Bad Brains, who coined the term PMA in their song “Attitude”. To this point, most rock and roll lyrics were focused on traditional cliches. Bad Brains, via frontman HR, chose instead to explore Rastafarian consciousness through his lyrics. HR saw PMA as a way to continue pushing forward in the face of strife, racism, and poverty.
The PMA is the foundation united anon which the positive hardcore, and arguably, the hardcore movement in general, is founded. Consider it the constitution. That every step forward, every thought, every action, every creation had to be done with the PMA first. Bad Brains preached the PMA gospel to their young audiences, who devoured a new message that was free of the corporate rock/disco cliches like sex, drugs and having a good time. The PMA mindset has spawned a lifestyle of its own within hardcore, and Cro-Mags frontman John Joseph wrote an entire book on it called The PMA Effect. As Joseph says in his book, the PMA combats the Enemy Mind. That which tries to keep us in negativity, of doubt, and in sloth.
Which brings me to this: is there a better alternative to the PMA? If I choose [the PMA is a choice] a negative mindset, how’s that working for me? #WeGotThatPMA #YoDubMixes #PMA #HardcorePunk
