Just a few weeks ago, the US President sent an envoy to Burkina Faso, to apologize on behalf of the ridiculous statement made by General Langley, the US AFRICOM Commander. While President Traore didn’t meet the envoy personally, the authorities in Burkina Faso made it clear that cooperation with the US will only be based on mutual benefit and respect. Now, just a few days ago, President Trump replaced General Langley with Lt. Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson as the new AFRICOM Commander. While this may seem as a normal appointment to many, for Pan-Africanists, it’s actually a message. But what exactly is this message? Let’s find out.

On June 4th, 2025, President Trump quietly nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson was the next commander of the United States Africa Command AFRICOM. Anderson is expected to replace General Langley when his two-year term comes to an end. In 2022, General Langley made history when he became the first Black four-star general in the U.S. Marine Corps and the first African American to lead AFRICOM. For those of you not aware, AFRICOM is a US military organization that reports directly to the US government and is in charge of overseeing the US military operations and activities in Africa.

According to the US AFRICOM, its purpose in Africa is counterterrorism operations, strategic military training, and support for regional stability. Since its inception in 2007, the number of US military bases across Africa has steadily increased with greater concentration in countries facing security challenges. However, despite the presence of the US military in these areas, the security challenges have only increased. This is a fact echoed by General Langley himself. According to him, before AFRICOM was established in 2007, terrorism in Africa was just 2 percent of global terrorism. Think about it. Why did the US think it was necessary to create an organization to fight terrorism in Africa at a time when terrorist activities were almost non-existent? Anyone can clearly see that it screams of ulterior motives.
