𝄞 If I had not allowed myself to get into the tedium of over working and analyzing this LoFi tune I probably would not have created and discovered this texture: Many monophonic synths all gliding to and from chord tones in a slippery choir. My beat morphed from J Dilla into Snarky Puppy. This video tells the 2 year story of how I may have ruined a perfectly good Lofi Hiphop instrumental track with complexity. Maybe for the better, maybe for the worse. In April of 2021 I used the midi connectivity of the Yamaha Electone HX-1 organ to record improvisations into Ableton Live. I found it difficult to accept the simple creative ideas I was improvising for what they were. There was always the lingering feeling that further editing and crafting would turn a good musical idea into a great one. This can be a major obstacle because it prevents me from accessing the deceptive simplicity exemplified in the music of Fred Again, Ben Bohmer, J Dilla, Floating Points, Fourtet, Wayne Shorter, Ahmad Jamal, Henry Mancini, Paul Desmond, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and countless others. Often times I create a musical idea that is satisfying on some level, but if it is on the simpler side, I’ll jump into a pattern of habitually complicating the idea; often losing the original essence in the pursuit of greater technical indulgences. In this video I will show you one such scenario; how I took a nice Lofi Hiphop instrumental improvisation and ruined it by blindly reaching for complexity. 𝄢
