The intersection of folk and jazz is marked by a number of noteworthy moments. We might think of Joni Mitchell, for example, the Laurel Canyon legend whose opus Mingus brought the seventies to an end in style, with prestigious guests including saxophonist Wayne Shorter, keyboardist Herbie Hancock and, of course, bassist Jaco Pastorius. Or of Norah Jones, who has been blending her melodic art with some undeniably addictive jazz-pop arrangements for several decades now, as evidenced by her record-breaking album sales.
Following in the footsteps of these figures, British singer Rosie Frater-Taylor made a name for herself in 2021 with Bloom, a second album which rightly drew the attention of critics and music lovers alike. Recording at Le Claque studio for this new Analogue session, the young singer and guitarist sets the tone from the very first track, the aptly named “Heartbeat.” Accompanied by a strong rhythm section, the performer unveils a talent for storytelling, as evidenced by the sophisticated “No Scrubs” (a cover of Atlanta female trio TLC). Finally, the vintage decor of the singular Parisian studio stands in contrast to the track “Give & Take,” an up-tempo number driven by an impressively mature voice.
