When airplanes fly high in the sky, it's not uncommon to see a white trail behind them. This phenomenon, called a contrail or condensation trail, is formed when water vapor from the combustion of aircraft fuel meets very cold air in the atmosphere; this water vapor condenses and freezes, forming small ice crystals that create the white trail we usually see on the back of the plane.
